How Do I Get Through an Identity Crisis?
In 1950, Erik Erikson coined the term “identity crisis”.
He labeled this experience, not to explain an unfortunate event that happens to some, but to refer to the very normal experience that we all have as we navigate who we are and who we want to be in this world.
However, what sets apart those who experience greater life satisfaction from those who get trapped in “disengaged confusion” is the time taken to build identity capital starting in your 20s. Identity capital is not just what goes on your resume; it is also the collection of experiences you have over your lifetime that form who you are as a whole. The only way to authentically build identity capital is to explore your curiosities and make commitments along the way.
Because the pandemic has allowed us this time to slow down and reflect, it might be a good time to ask yourself: How are you building identity capital? Are you actively pursuing things that excite you personally and professionally, or are you putting your head down and waiting for the “right time” to explore something new?
