A needed balance for success
In a short article by Ben Cousins, it is explored why millennials work and what they want from their jobs. According to Cousins, millennials want to feel meaning in their work more than anything else. According to his study, millennials that found meaning in their work are three times more likely to stay at a company and they are twice as likely to stay if they feel heard.
I think this is an interesting point, which is what Perform with Purpose seeks to help people find within their careers.
However, Adam Marinelli responded to Cousins’ article by discussing how even though a meaning is important to millennials, it cannot be considered the only thing that keeps people at their jobs. He lists that these jobs must also incentivize employees by allowing them to make decisions such as remote or hybrid schedules, advancement in career, and paid leave as a few of the ways that companies can keep their employees within the company. I think his addition is a very important point because I feel as though often, we look at finding meaning in our work as the only reason to stay. People need to acknowledge that even if a job has meaning, people need to have a reason to stay through the company to help maintain this meaning and allow it to be a livable lifestyle.
The article along with Marinelli’s additions helps to show how employees need a balance between meaning but also good work practices to feel fulfilled and happy at a company. With a healthy balance of the two, I think everyone will feel a little more needed and fulfilled in their work and life.
